The department focuses on the research of general and Croatian lexicology and lexicography. The results of the research are general language and terminological dictionaries. Scientific and expert tasks are carried out in the fields of the formation and cultivation of the Croatian standard language, its structure and role in the Croatian language area.

| Department of Croatian Language History and Historical Lexicography |

|
The department deals with the history of the Croatian language, literacy and linguistics, focusing its research on the phonology, grammar and lexis of the Croatian historical dialects (Čakavian, Štokavian, Kajkavian, hybrid dialect) and three Croatian scripts (Glagolitic, Cyrillic and Latin), as well as early books on the Croatian language. Valuable historical works are digitized and then linguistically analyzed for the purpose of compiling a digitized historical corpus of the Croatian language.

| Department of Dialectology |
|

|
The main focus of this department is the research of the Croatian idioms in Croatia and abroad. The results of the research are published in dialectal works (monographs, dictionaries, atlases). The corpus is systematically gathered through field research, and is then digitized and systematized for a digital map of the Croatian idioms. Audio data for a digital record library are also gathered and systematically analyzed.

| Department of Onomastics and Etymology |

|
The department carries out onomastic and etymological research. The contemporary and historical names data (toponymic, anthroponymic and other) are systematically gathered on the territory of Croatia through field research, after which they are analyzed for compilation into an onomastic data base. The department also works on the compilation of an etymological dictionary of the Croatian language.

| Department of General, Comparative and Computational Linguistics |
|
|
|
The department carries out comparative and computational linguistic research. Also, the fundamental works of contemporary linguistics are translated and published. Language data for a representative corpus of the Croatian standard language are gathered and digitized, as well as the data for corpora of the Croatian language form earlier periods.
