Croatian Technical Terminology (STRUNA)
STRUNA is a coordinated project of the Department for the Croatian Standard Language financed by National Foundation for Science, Higher Education and Technological Development of the Republic of Croatia in the period between January 15, 2008 and January 15, 2009.
The aim of the project is to establish a system of coordination among all terminological activities in all professions in Croatia.
The project supports the strategic values of the Foundation and fits into two basic areas of National Strategy for Science Development (development of information technology and sociocultural transition from an industrial society to a knowledge-based society).
Research terminology network will also be established as well as scientific cooperation among numerous institutions that deal with different aspects of terminology work. In order to fulfill the aims, principles for establishing and selection of appropriate terminology will be formulated and terminology manuals will be made. Workshops will be organized to educate and qualify experts in terminology work.
Also, the data base will be developed where well-defined terminology from different professions and their Croatian synonyms and equivalents in several European languages will be input according to uniform principles. Terminology and definitions from different professions will be input by the experts that will join the project of developing the terminology data base in its second phase, while the Institute will provide Croatistic and lexicographic verification and confirmation of suggested terminology.
The competition for the second phase of the project is planned to be open in October 2008. Formed that way, the project will enable the natural flow of knowledge, scientific achievements and information on Croatian language.
A new comprehensive etymological dictionary of the Croatian standard language is being made by Prof. Dr. Ranko Matasović within the framework of the scientific project "Onomastic and Etymological Research of the Croatian Language" (2120920-0921) at the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics. All readers are kindly asked to e-mail the professor their observations, reviews, proposals and recommendations.
